Bracero Cocina de Raiz in Little Italy is adding Chapulines to their menu on Thursday, February 16th. Yup, you heard right, Chapulines. What is a chapulin? Well, a chapulin is a grasshopper.
A Mexican delicacy, chapulines, are one of Mexico’s most important edible insects and have been an integral part in the culinary history of the country. Mostly consumed in Oaxaca and the southern region of the country, the chapulines at Bracero are sourced from the Central Valleys of Oaxaca, known for their quality and delicate herbal taste. The grasshoppers are dehydrated, which is what gives them that crunchy taste, and can be eaten as a stand-alone snack or can be added to guacamole, tacos, quesadillas or even dessert
Order the chapulines as a snack to accompany your agave cocktail or Mexican beer, or add them to your guacamole and Bracero’s famous street tacos. The chapulines have a very mild nutty and herbal flavor that is similar to jerky or shrimp with a smoky taste.
