The number of food halls in the U.S. hit 100 last year, and experts predict that number will more than double by 2019. Leading the next wave of food halls is Carlsbad’s highly anticipated Windmill Food Hall, which will be a far cry from lackluster food courts of years past. The 14,000 square foot space is currently slated to open its doors this August within the building where the city’s iconic windmill landmark sits nearby Carlsbad Premium Outlets. Windmill Food Hall has confirmed six of its 11 vendors as well as a standalone breakfast restaurant. Each of them has been strategically selected to offer a diverse, complementary selection. The team is still selectively deciding on the remaining vendors. Vendors include an Asian-inspired dessert spot called Bing Hause, gourmet breakfast sandwich and coffee joint called Crackheads, Bread and Cheese Eatery, Korean-style fried chicken spot called Cross Street Chicken & Beer, Doughballs Pizza, Rolled Up, Taco Lady and Thai Style Kitchen.
James Markham, the brainchild behind the concept, visited and researched food halls all over the country to conceptualize his own unparalleled spin on the trend. The interior will blend beautiful vintage 30’s-40’s era inspired and authentic elements and artwork for an inviting, experiential atmosphere. Windmill Food Hall will incorporate a vast amount of traditional bar seating, a welcoming outdoor area, and a room called The Library with relaxed, communal seating and a central fireplace. Family-friendly games will be scattered throughout the day-to-night destination, including an interactive green screen, ping pong, and lawn games.
