Masters Kitchen welcomes new executive chef Josh Richardi

Masters Kitchen and Cocktail, an expansive and airy Oceanside restaurant fashioned from a 1930s machine shop that specializes in seasonal cuisine and cocktails served with the proper accoutrements, welcomes Josh Richardi as executive chef. Richardi’s experience and approach add a boost of flavor and style to an already deliciously welcoming locale. With almost 20 years of culinary experience, Richardi will help Masters’ owner Ryan Jubela, a pioneer in Oceanside dining, accomplish his vision for the nearly three year-old restaurant.

Originally from Florida, Richardi relocated to San Diego to pursue his passion for creating classic dishes with exotic twists, like the addition of Chinese spices (his great grandparents owned a Chinese restaurant — in China). His California culinary career began at Pacifica del Mar, where he worked as a line cook. From there, Richardi built up his impressive resume holding positions at Rancho Valencia, La Valencia Hotel, The Chart House, The Santaluz Club and Roppongi.

“Chef Richardi is masterful in the kitchen, from his extreme focus on quality to the rich textures and flavors of his dishes,” said Masters owner Ryan Jubela. “We both love the Oceanside community and are dedicated to giving locals and travelers an incredible culinary experience in a laid back, welcoming atmosphere.”

Richardi revamped the Masters Kitchen and Cocktail menu, applying his classic French technique to comforting Californian dishes. Guests can look forward to seasonal items like the roasted jidori chicken breast as well as mainstays like the gourmet grilled cheese. And consistency. Richardi means business in his kitchen, and prides himself on a well-trained staff to ensure each dish comes out as intended.

“I make it a priority to share my technique and knowledge,” said Richardi. “My team and I keep our technique simple and focus on elevating the natural flavors in each dish.”

Known as the “reserved kitchen guy,” Richardi isn’t big on over-the-top dishes; rather, he favors simplicity. His mouthwatering food speaks for itself. Richardi is also known for not allowing music in his kitchen. The reason? Avoiding music wars that often bring too much heat to an already steamy kitchen. Catch him outside of his “office” and you’re likely to see his wit and humor. “I’m really funny,” Richardi deadpanned. “Situational comedy is my forte.”

The cuisine at Masters Kitchen and Cocktail continues to impress under the direction of this new chef. As far as the quality of his jokes, the jury’s still out.

Masters Kitchen and Cocktail is open Monday - Thursday from 3 to 10 p.m., Friday 11 a.m. to midnight, Saturday 10 a.m. to midnight and Sunday 9:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.
